Why does a domain cost more to renew than to register?

The first-year price is often a discount; the renewal is the real yearly cost. Here is where the gap comes from, how large it was in October 2026, and how to avoid paying it by surprise.

Quick answer

Why do domain renewals cost more than the first year?

Domain renewals cost more because the first year is often sold below the normal price, as a promotion by the registrar or the registry, and renewals return to full price. As of 29 October 2026, 35 of the 43 extensions DotAlmanac sells in your name renew higher; .io goes from $33.99 to $52.49.

What is a domain renewal?

A renewal is the payment that keeps your domain registered for another period, usually one year. You never buy a domain outright: you register it for a fixed term, then extend it. DotAlmanac is a domain extension guide and registrar: compare every extension, then register it with no KYC and pay in crypto.

Most extensions accept 1 to 10 years per payment. According to DotAlmanac's table of 225 extensions, only .ai imposes a 2-year minimum. Nine extensions, including .de, .nl and .ch, accept only 1 year at a time.

If you do not renew, the domain expires and can later be released to someone else. DotAlmanac offers automatic renewal from your balance, switched on or off for each domain.

What is a first-year promo price?

A first-year promo price is a discount that applies to the first year only. Registrars use it to win new customers; the renewal then charges the full price.

Three examples from October 2026:

  • Namecheap .com: $6.48 the first year with the code NEWCOM648, for new customers only. The renewal is $18.48, or $14.78 with a renewal code (19 October 2026).
  • Spaceship .com: $9.08 the first year, or $2.90 with the code COMPROS, then $10.18 to renew (19 October 2026).
  • Porkbun .xyz: $2.04 the first year, then $14.21 to renew (19 October 2026).

Verisign and ICANN charge registrars $10.46 per .com year. A $6.48 or $2.90 first year is therefore below that list cost, while Namecheap's $18.48 renewal ($14.78 with a code) sits $8.02 above it.

Do registries charge more for renewals too?

Yes, on some extensions the jump starts at the registry itself. The cleanest proof is Cloudflare Registrar, which states that it charges the registry and ICANN fees with no markup.

On 8 October 2026, Cloudflare listed .io at $32.00 for the first year and $50.00 to renew: +56%, with no registrar margin. On .com, Cloudflare charges $10.46 in both years: the registry price has no first-year discount.

Registry fees also rise over time. On 1 November 2026, Verisign lifts its .com fee from $10.26 to $10.97; with the $0.20 ICANN fee, a .com year then costs registrars $11.17 instead of $10.46 (+6.8%). Public Interest Registry raised the .org fee to $11.00 on 1 June 2026. Verisign's .net fee goes from $10.91 to $12.00 on 1 March 2027.

How much does the renewal add over five years?

Over five years, renewals are four payments out of five, so they decide the total. The registrar with the cheapest first year often ends up more expensive.

  • .com at Namecheap: $6.48 + 4 × $18.48 = $80.40 at the list renewal price, or $65.60 with both codes.
  • .com at Cloudflare Registrar: 5 × $10.46 = $52.30, with no code.
  • .io at Porkbun: $28.12 + 4 × $51.80 = $235.32. The first year is 12% of the total.

The $6.48 promo year saves $3.98 against Cloudflare, then the renewals cost $17.28 more over the next four years. Our list of the cheapest domain extensions to renew ranks extensions by the price that lasts.

How do you avoid the renewal trap?

Five checks before you pay for a new domain.

  1. Read the renewal price first

Look for the renewal price before the first-year price. On DotAlmanac's price list, every extension shows both side by side.

  2. Work out five years

Add the first year to four renewals. Compare that total between extensions and registrars, not the first year alone.

  3. Check the promo conditions

A low first year can need a code, be limited to new customers, or apply to one year only. Namecheap's $6.48 .com needs NEWCOM648.

  4. Prefer a one-price extension

At DotAlmanac, .com, .net, .ai, .co, .xyz, .info, .me and .gg cost the same every year, as of 29 October 2026.

  5. Turn on auto-renew and keep a balance

DotAlmanac offers automatic renewal from your balance, switched on or off for each domain. Unused balance stays on your account and never expires, and it pays for new domains, renewals and transfers. When a purchase costs less than the minimum top-up, the part added only to reach the minimum is refundable on request to support within 30 days of the payment, in USDT or USDC, as long as it has not been spent. The rest of the balance is not paid back, except where the law requires it.

Does DotAlmanac charge more at renewal?

Yes, on 35 of its 43 extensions sold in your name, by 3% to 67% as of 29 October 2026. The other eight keep one price. We show the renewal price next to the first-year price for every extension, and no price on our list needs a promo code.

We do not claim to be the cheapest registrar. Porkbun's first year of .io ($28.12, 19 October 2026) is below ours ($33.99), and Cloudflare renews .io at $50.00 against our $52.49. Our case is different: registration with no ID, payment in crypto (BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC, XMR), and no surprise in year two.

The optional Domain protection adds +$29/year per domain, every year you keep it. See what is Domain protection.

Domain renewal prices: FAQ

Is it normal for a domain renewal to cost more?

Yes. In DotAlmanac's grid, 35 of 43 extensions renew higher than their first year, as of 29 October 2026. At Porkbun, six of the nine extensions in our index renew higher (19 October 2026).

Does a transfer avoid the higher renewal price?

No. At DotAlmanac, a transfer costs the renewal price: $52.49/year for a .io, as of 29 October 2026. Moving to another registrar saves money only if its renewal price is lower, so compare renewals, not first-year promos.

Why is .io so expensive to renew?

Because the registry price itself is high. Cloudflare, which sells at cost, renews .io at $50.00 (8 October 2026). The registry is Internet Computer Bureau, a subsidiary of Identity Digital. At DotAlmanac, .io renews at $52.49/year.

Will .com renewals rise in November 2026?

The registry cost rises on that date: Verisign's $10.26 becomes $10.97, or $11.17 a year once the ICANN fee is added. DotAlmanac's .com renews at $11.99/year as of 29 October 2026.

Which extensions renew at the same price at DotAlmanac?

Eight, as of 29 October 2026: .com, .net, .ai, .co, .xyz, .info, .me and .gg. The full list with every first-year and renewal price is in the domain renewal price index 2026.
