Quick answer
Is .io better than .com?
.io vs .com: .com is the better choice for most projects, and .io wins only for developer-facing products whose .com is taken. As of 29 October 2026, DotAlmanac sells .com at $11.99/year with the same price to renew, and .io at $33.99/year, rising to $52.49/year. No KYC, paid in crypto.

Which should you buy, .io or .com?
Buy the .com if it is free or affordable, and add the .io only if your users are developers. A .com needs no explanation to customers, banks or anyone who hears your email address. A .io tells engineers that the product is software. That helps a developer tool and does little for anyone else.
DotAlmanac is a domain extension guide and registrar: compare every extension, then register it with no KYC and pay in crypto. We sell both extensions, so the verdict below follows cost and fit, not what we earn on each one. Every price on this page is also on our pricing page.
How much more does a .io cost than a .com over 5 years?
A .io costs about four times as much as a .com over 5 years at DotAlmanac. The sums, as of 29 October 2026: $33.99 + 4 × $52.49 = $243.95 for .io, and $11.99 + 4 × $11.99 = $59.95 for .com.
The gap comes from the renewal. According to DotAlmanac's price grid on 29 October 2026, 35 of 43 extensions cost more to renew than to register. .io has the second-largest jump, +54 %, after .app at +67 %. .com is one of the 8 that renew at the first-year price.
The mistake is to budget the first year only; why renewals cost more explains the jump.
Is the Chagos question a real risk for a .io domain?
It is a long-term risk, not a current problem: .io works normally as of 29 October 2026. The extension stands for the British Indian Ocean Territory, the UK territory that includes the Chagos Islands. A country code depends on the territory it names, so a change of sovereignty raises questions about its future.
The treaty between the United Kingdom and Mauritius on the Chagos Islands was frozen in 2026. The registry is Internet Computer Bureau Limited, a subsidiary of Identity Digital.
Our reading: for a product you may rename within 5 years, this changes nothing. For a name you plan to keep for decades, hold the .com as well, or keep a fallback name ready.
Do people trust a .io address as much as a .com?
Developers and tech investors do; the general public treats .com as the normal ending. A customer who hears your brand name once will often type .com from habit. If someone else owns that .com, they receive your lost visitors and part of your misdirected email.
So look at the .com first. If an active company in your field owns it, choose another name; if it is parked, the .io works. Our guide on checking availability shows how.
Which extension fits your project?
| Project | Pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Developer tool, API or SDK | .io | Your users know the extension, and short names are easier to find |
| B2B SaaS sold to engineers | .io if the .com is taken | Credible with technical buyers; budget the $52.49/year renewal |
| Consumer app or online store | .com | Buyers type .com from habit, and it costs less every year |
| Company you plan to run for decades | .com, with the .io as a redirect | Keeps your main address clear of the Chagos question |
| Side project or prototype | .com or a lower-cost extension | A .io costs $52.49/year after year one; see .app vs .dev |
Where can you buy .io or .com for less than at DotAlmanac?
Porkbun and Cloudflare sell both for less, and we say so. Porkbun lists a .io at $28.12 for the first year, against $33.99 here (19 October 2026). Cloudflare Registrar lists .com at $10.46 and .io renewals at $50.00 (8 October 2026). On these two extensions we are not the low-cost option.
The accounts differ more than the prices. Porkbun may ask some new accounts for a photo ID through Veriff. Cloudflare documents no crypto payment and requires its own DNS. DotAlmanac asks for no ID, takes BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC, and prints each renewal price next to the first-year price.
What do other registrars charge for .io and .com?
Each cell reads first year / renewal, in US dollars per year. The date in the first column is the day we read that price list.
| Registrar (date read) | .io | .com | .io over 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| DotAlmanac (29 Oct 2026) | $33.99 / $52.49 | $11.99 / $11.99 | $33.99 + 4 × $52.49 = $243.95 |
| Porkbun (19 Oct 2026) | $28.12 / $51.80 | $11.08 / $11.08 | $235.32 |
| Cloudflare Registrar (8 Oct 2026) | $32.00 / $50.00 | $10.46 / $10.46 | $232.00 |
| Dynadot (8 Oct 2026) | $28.89 / $53.50 | $10.88 / $10.88 | $242.89 |
| Namecheap (.io 8 Oct, .com 19 Oct 2026) | $32.18 / $60.98 | $6.48 (code NEWCOM648, new customers) / $18.48 ($14.78 with a renewal code) | $276.10 |

On 1 November 2026 Verisign raises its .com fee from $10.26 to $10.97, so the wholesale cost with the $0.20 ICANN fee reaches $11.17. Porkbun's $11.08 and Dynadot's $10.88 sit below that new cost. Namecheap figures from domainoffer.net.
Can you check whether the .io and the .com are both free?
Yes: one search in our client area checks a name in several extensions. It asks the registry's RDAP service first, then a commercial WHOIS service where RDAP is not usable. For .io, the result can read Availability confirmed at order: the final check happens at registration. If the name was taken in the meantime, if a domain cannot be registered (taken in the meantime, registry refusal), the full amount goes back to your balance.
.io vs .com: FAQ
Is .io a country domain?
Yes. .io is the ISO code assigned to the British Indian Ocean Territory, yet anyone can register it, with no local address. Of the 94 country codes in DotAlmanac's table of 225 extensions, 52 are open to anyone, .io included.
Does Google treat a .io site as local to one country?
No. Google lists .io among the country codes it treats as generic, like .com. Your site is not tied to the British Indian Ocean Territory in search results, and the extension gives no ranking advantage.
Should I register both the .io and the .com?
Yes, if the name is your company name and both are free. Point the second domain to the first one: free URL forwarding and email forwarding from the client area. The .com adds $11.99/year to your yearly costs.
Will the .io renewal price rise again?
Our .io renewal is $52.49/year as of 29 October 2026. Renewing several years at once fixes today's price for each of them; see should you register a domain for 10 years.
Can I pay for a .io or .com domain in Bitcoin?
Yes. Bitcoin is one of the coins DotAlmanac accepts: BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC. You fund a balance, from $25, and each domain is paid from it. Pay the exact amount on the network the order page names; the balance is credited when that network confirms the payment.
