What is the best domain extension for a startup?

When the exact .com is free, take it. When it is not, the choice between a longer .com, .io and .co depends on who buys from you.

Quick answer

What is the best domain extension for a startup?

The best domain extension for a startup is .com when the exact name is free: $11.99/year at DotAlmanac, with no renewal increase. Otherwise, take .io or .co. As of 29 October 2026, .io costs $33.99 the first year and $52.49 per renewal, so price five years before you commit.

Which extension should a startup choose first?

The exact .com, whenever it is free at the normal price. DotAlmanac is a domain extension guide and registrar: compare every extension, then register it with no KYC and pay in crypto. Our rule for founders is simple: one exact .com beats any other extension.

When the exact .com is taken, you face a real trade-off. You can add a word to the .com, such as get, try or hq. Or you can keep the bare name and move to .io or .co. Our recommendation depends on who buys:

  • B2B, developer or SaaS buyers: take the bare name in .io. These buyers know the extension and arrive through links, not from memory.
  • Consumer buyers: take a .com with one short added word. People who hear a name on a podcast or from a friend type .com first.
  • Non-technical companies: take .co. It is shorter than .io, reads as company and keeps one price every year.

How much does each startup extension cost over five years?

Five years cost the first year plus four renewals, and the .io renewal is the line that moves the total most. DotAlmanac's price grid shows 35 of its 43 extensions renewing above the first-year price, as of 29 October 2026. For .io the gap is +54 %, the second-widest in the grid after .app.

Is .io cheaper at other registrars?

Yes, for the first year. As of 19 October 2026, per its price list, Porkbun sold .io at $28.12, then $51.80 to renew. We do not claim to be the cheapest registrar. What DotAlmanac offers instead: no KYC, payment in crypto, and the renewal printed next to the first-year price.

The renewals sit closer together than the first years. Across the five registrars below, a .io renewal costs between $50.00 and $60.98, so the five-year gap is smaller than the first-year gap.

What can go wrong with a .io or .co domain?

Two risks belong to these extensions, and both can be managed.

  • .io and the Chagos question. The .io code belongs to the British Indian Ocean Territory. A UK–Mauritius treaty on the Chagos Islands was shelved in 2026, and .io runs normally. Its long-term status stays uncertain, so hold the matching .com or a fallback name.
  • .co and stray email. People who type from memory add an m. Mail sent to the .com reaches its owner, not you. Print the full address on invoices, and check who runs the .com before you commit.

The search behaves differently too. For .io and .co, a result can read 'Availability confirmed at order': the registry gives the final answer at registration. The rule then: if a domain cannot be registered (taken in the meantime, registry refusal), the full amount goes back to your balance.

Which domain mistakes cost founders the most?

Losing control of the domain costs more than any price difference. Four mistakes cause most of the damage:

  • Registering it in an employee's account. The registrant of record controls the domain. Use an account the founders control, and write down who holds it.
  • Skipping the trademark search. A name that copies a registered mark can be lost through a UDRP complaint. Search the trademark registers of your main markets first.
  • Letting it lapse. An expired domain takes email and login links down with it. DotAlmanac offers automatic renewal from your balance, switched on or off for each domain; keep the balance above the next renewal.
  • Moving it too early. After a registration or a transfer, a gTLD such as .com stays locked for 60 days under ICANN rules. Plan any move to a company account after that window.

Startup domains: FAQ

Is .io still a good domain for a startup in 2026?

Yes, for tech and B2B products. It is open to anyone and works normally, though the Chagos dispute adds long-term uncertainty. At DotAlmanac it costs $33.99 the first year and $52.49 per renewal, as of 29 October 2026.

Should a startup buy both the .com and the .io?

Yes, if the .com is available at a normal price. Run the product on one and point the other at it. Two renewals cost less than visitors lost to someone else's .com.

Is .co a good alternative to .com for a startup?

Yes, if you accept the typing risk. .co is open to anyone and costs $31.99/year at DotAlmanac, with no increase at renewal. It can be registered for 5 years at most.

Is .ai better than .io for a startup?

Only when AI is the product. .ai costs $84.49/year and is sold 2 years at a time, so it costs more than .io over five years. See .ai vs .io.

Can a startup pay for its domain in stablecoins?

Yes. DotAlmanac accepts BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC. Top up from $25, then pay registrations and renewals from the balance; no card, no ID.
