Why rank extensions by renewal price?

Because you pay the renewal price every year after the first, for as long as you keep the domain. DotAlmanac is a domain extension guide and registrar: compare every extension, then register it with no KYC and pay in crypto. We rank by renewal because that is the number that decides your bill.

Over five years, the first year is a small part of the cost. A .io at Cloudflare Registrar costs $32.00 the first year and $50.00 to renew, so $232.00 over five years; the first year is 14% of it (8 October 2026). The full comparison is in the domain renewal price index 2026.

How close are these renewals to the wholesale cost?

Very close on .com: Cloudflare renews at the registry cost itself, and Dynadot and Porkbun within 62 cents of it. Verisign charges $10.26 for a .com, plus a $0.20 ICANN fee: $10.46 in total. From 1 November 2026, the fee is $10.97, so the total becomes $11.17.

Cloudflare sells at that cost: $10.46 on 8 October 2026. Dynadot renews .com at $10.88 (8 October 2026) and Porkbun at $11.08 (19 October 2026). DotAlmanac renews it at $11.99, so those three registrars renew .com for less than we do. What DotAlmanac adds is no ID check, payment in crypto, and the renewal price shown next to the first-year price.

Which extensions cost the most to renew?

Country codes sold as tech brands and some long new gTLDs renew far higher. At DotAlmanac, as of 29 October 2026:

  • .ai: $84.49/year, billed 2 years at a time. According to DotAlmanac's table of 225 extensions, .ai is the only one with a 2-year minimum.
  • .gg: $82.49/year, with 1-year terms only.
  • .store: $54.99/year.
  • .io: $52.49/year, after $33.99/year the first year.
  • .tech: $51.49/year.

Each of these costs more per year than four .com renewals combined. Pick them for the name, not for the price. Our .ai vs .io comparison weighs the two most popular ones.

How do you keep your renewal bill low?

Choose on the renewal price, then lock in the habits that avoid surprises.

  • Compare renewals, not first years. Our price list shows both for every extension.
  • Prefer a one-price extension. 8 of DotAlmanac's 43 keep the same price every year: .com, .net, .ai, .co, .xyz, .info, .me and .gg.
  • Read promo conditions. Namecheap's $6.48 .com needs the code NEWCOM648, for new customers only (19 October 2026).
  • Register for several years where allowed. Most extensions go up to 10 years; .co stops at 5 and .de at 1. See should you register a domain for 10 years.
  • Turn on auto-renew. At DotAlmanac: automatic renewal from your balance, switched on or off for each domain.
  • Know the transfer price. At DotAlmanac, a transfer costs the renewal price, so moving a .com in costs $11.99.
