The .com is the default ending of the web, and the default is not always the best pick. This entry sets out who gains from a .com, who should look elsewhere, and what it costs to keep one.

**Quick answer — Is .com still the best domain extension in 2026?**

For most businesses with a worldwide audience, yes. A .com is open to anyone, Verisign sets no residency rule, and people type it by habit, which protects your email and traffic. At **DotAlmanac**, a domain extension guide and registrar, a .com costs **$11.99/year** the first year and $11.99/year to renew (29 October 2026), paid in crypto with no KYC.

## Search a .com domain

Search a domain name: https://dotalmanac.com/app/domains/?q=yourname.com

Popular extensions: .com ($11.99)

A .com search asks the Verisign registry over RDAP, so an “available” result reflects the official registry record at the time you search.

## .com at a glance

| Attribute | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Registry | Verisign |
| Kind of extension | Generic TLD (gTLD), one of the original 1985 endings |
| Best for | Global businesses, products and any brand that relies on email |
| Who can register | Anyone in any country; no residency or business test |
| Public WHOIS / RDAP | Verisign holds no owner contact; registrar privacy is free |
| Registration period | 1 to 10 years per registration |
| Watch out for | Verisign wholesale rise on 1 November 2026; 60-day transfer lock |

## .com price per year

| Extension | 1st year | Renewal | Transfer | WHOIS privacy | Restrictions |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| .com | $11.99 | $11.99 | $11.99 | Free | None |

On .com the renewal line matches the first-year line, so the yearly cost does not jump in year two.

## Who gains the most from a .com?

Pick .com when your audience spans several countries, or when you cannot predict where customers will come from. It is also the right call for any firm that lives on email: a sales team, an agency, a law office, a supplier. People who hear your name out loud type .com first, so owning it stops mail and visits from leaking to someone else. Skip .com when the exact name sells only on the aftermarket, far above your budget. A clean .io, .co or country code beats a long, hyphenated .com. DotAlmanac's cost data for 29 October 2026 explains why .com prices sit so close together. Verisign charges every registrar $10.26 per name, plus a $0.20 ICANN fee.

## Projects where .com works, and where it does not

| Project | Verdict for .com |
| --- | --- |
| International SaaS or online product | Strong fit: buyers in every region read .com as a normal business address. |
| Agency or consultancy that sells by email | Strong fit: clients type the ending they expect, so fewer messages go astray. |
| Neighbourhood shop serving one country | Mixed fit: a local country code signals the market more clearly, if its rules let you register. |
| Developer tool whose .com is taken | Poor fit: a long or hyphenated .com is weaker than a short .dev or .io. |
| Brand protection for an existing company | Good fit: holding the .com keeps your exact name away from imitators. |

## How .com compares with .net, .org, .co and .io

Against [.net and .org](https://dotalmanac.com/com-vs-net-vs-org/ "Should I choose .com, .net or .org for my website?"), .com wins for commerce: .net reads as infrastructure, and .org reads as a nonprofit or a community. Against [.co](https://dotalmanac.com/co-vs-com/ "Is a .co domain as good as a .com?"), .com wins on habit; a .co owner loses mail and visits from people who type .com by mistake. Against [.io](https://dotalmanac.com/io-vs-com/ "Is .io better than .com for a startup?"), the answer depends on your audience. Developers accept .io without a second look, but a general consumer audience does not know it. If the .com of your name is free, take it first, then decide whether a second ending helps. The full method is in [how to choose a domain extension](https://dotalmanac.com/how-to-choose-a-domain-extension/ "How do I choose the right domain extension?").

## Verisign, the 1985 origins and the wholesale fee

.com is one of the generic endings created in January 1985. Verisign runs the registry under a contract with ICANN. It is a thin registry: Verisign stores the domain, its nameservers and its dates, but receives no contact data about the owner. That data stays with the registrar. The wholesale fee is identical for every registrar, and it rises to $10.97 per name per year on 1 November 2026. Retail prices therefore differ only by margin and promotions. Verisign also signs the zone with DNSSEC and accepts internationalised names.

## Pitfalls before you buy a .com

Watch the renewal line, not the advert. Some registrars sell year one with a code and then renew far higher. The wholesale rise on 1 November 2026 will push many .com prices up, so check any quote dated before that day again. ICANN rules also block a move to another registrar for 60 days after each registration or transfer. Finally, check the aftermarket. A short .com listed “for sale” by a reseller costs far more than the registry fee, and the seller alone sets that price.

## What other registrars charge for a .com

We do not claim to be the cheapest registrar for .com. As of 19 October 2026, per its price list, Porkbun charges $11.08 for the first year and the same to renew. Cloudflare Registrar sells at cost, $10.46 as of 8 October 2026, but documents no crypto payment and requires its own DNS. Namecheap offered $6.48 to new customers with a promo code on 19 October 2026. Its renewal is $18.48 ($14.78 with a renewal code).

## .com questions

### Can anyone register a .com, wherever they live?

Yes. Verisign has no citizenship, residency or company test for .com, and our table lists it as open to all. You need one working email address, which is verified for each domain under ICANN rules. No identity document is part of the order at DotAlmanac.

### Does my name appear in a public .com lookup?

Not from the registry. Verisign never receives owner contact data, because .com is a thin registry. The registrar holds that data, and WHOIS privacy is free on every .com we sell. A public RDAP query therefore returns the privacy service. Nameservers, status codes and dates stay public.

### Will .com prices go up after 1 November 2026?

The registry cost goes up: Verisign's wholesale fee moves from $10.26 to $10.97 on 1 November 2026. Each registrar decides how much of that rise it passes on. An order covering several years pays the current price for each year in it. Read [should you register a domain for 10 years](https://dotalmanac.com/should-you-register-a-domain-for-10-years/ "Should I register my domain for 10 years?") before you commit.

### How do I point a new .com at my website?

Use the DNS templates in the client area: Vercel, Netlify, GitHub Pages, Cloudflare Pages and Shopify each set the right records in one click. You can also enter your own nameservers, from 2 to 13. Step-by-step guides cover [GitHub Pages](https://dotalmanac.com/how-to-connect-a-domain-to-github-pages/ "How do I connect my domain to GitHub Pages?") and [Vercel](https://dotalmanac.com/how-to-connect-a-domain-to-vercel/ "How do I connect my domain to Vercel?").
