A .ai tells visitors what you build before they read your homepage. It also asks for two years of payment up front, and that changes the cost of a small project.

**Quick answer — Is a .ai domain worth it for an AI company?**

Yes, if your product is built on artificial intelligence and your budget covers two years at once. The Anguilla registry requires a 2-year minimum, for registration and for each renewal. At **DotAlmanac**, a domain extension guide and registrar, a .ai costs **$84.49/year** the first year and $84.49/year to renew (29 October 2026), paid in crypto with no KYC.

## Search a .ai domain

Search a domain name: https://dotalmanac.com/app/domains/?q=yourname.ai

Popular extensions: .ai ($84.49)

The .ai search checks the registry record at the time you search, through RDAP where the registry offers it and a WHOIS lookup otherwise.

## .ai at a glance

| Attribute | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Registry | Government of Anguilla |
| Kind of extension | Country code (ccTLD) of Anguilla, used worldwide for AI |
| Best for | AI models, tools, agents and machine-learning startups |
| Who can register | Anyone; no Anguilla address or company needed |
| Public WHOIS / RDAP | Privacy allowed; not offered by every registrar; free here |
| Registration period | 2 to 10 years; 2-year minimum on each renewal |
| Watch out for | Two years billed at once, transfers included |

## .ai price per year

| Extension | 1st year | Renewal | Transfer | WHOIS privacy | Restrictions |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| .ai | $84.49 | $84.49 | $84.49 | Free | min. 2 years · sold 2 years at a time; a transfer is billed 2 years (transfer + 1 renewal) |

*1 extensions · prices per year in USD*

The .ai is billed two years at a time, so the first invoice is twice the yearly price shown, and so is each renewal.

## Which companies should pay for a .ai?

Pay for a .ai when artificial intelligence is the product, not a feature in the footer. A model lab, an agent framework, an AI writing tool or a computer-vision API gains a clear label from the ending. Investors and users in that field read it at once. Skip .ai for a consulting firm that only lists AI among its services. Skip it, too, for a six-month hobby project or a budget that a two-year bill would strain. According to DotAlmanac's table of 225 extensions, .ai is the only one that imposes a 2-year minimum term. That rule doubles the cost of every naming mistake, so test the name before you commit.

## Use cases ranked for .ai

| Project | Verdict for .ai |
| --- | --- |
| AI model or agent platform | Strong fit: the ending names the product category. |
| Machine-learning API for developers | Good fit: short and clear, if the 2-year cost suits you. |
| Agency that adds AI to its services | Weak fit: a .com describes the whole business better. |
| Weekend AI experiment | Poor fit: two years of fees for a test is a bad trade. |
| Anguilla-based business | Good fit: the ending is its home country code. |

## Choosing between .ai, .io and .com

The [.ai vs .io comparison](https://dotalmanac.com/ai-vs-io/ "Should an AI startup use .ai or .io?") sets out the trade. A .ai names the technology and costs more per year, with a 2-year minimum. A .io stays neutral and can be bought for a single year. Against .com, a .ai wins when the .com of your name is taken or costs far more on the aftermarket. If you hold both, put the product on one and redirect the other to it with free URL forwarding. Our page on the [best domain extension for AI companies](https://dotalmanac.com/best-domain-extension-for-ai-companies/ "What is the best domain extension for an AI company?") ranks the options by cost and signal.

## Anguilla, Identity Digital and the 2-year rule

.ai is the country code of Anguilla, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean. The Government of Anguilla holds the registry, and Identity Digital operates it on the government's behalf. The registry sets no residency rule, so anyone can register. It does set a 2-year minimum for registration and renewal, a rule no other ending in our table shares. The zone supports DNSSEC but accepts no internationalised (IDN) names. Proxy privacy services appear on .ai records, though not every registrar offers one; WHOIS privacy is free on every .ai we sell.

## Hidden costs on a .ai

The 2-year minimum applies to transfers too. Moving a .ai to DotAlmanac is billed as two years: the transfer plus one renewal. Check this before you compare transfer prices, because some lists show a single year. Renewal prices at some registrars also climb after the first term; the next section gives one example. Finally, “AI” is a crowded word. Run a trademark search before you build a brand on a generic word plus .ai, since a UDRP complaint can take the name away.

## What a .ai costs elsewhere

Prices are per year, and every seller bills at least two years. Porkbun charges $82.70 a year, and $165.09 for a transfer, as of 19 October 2026, per its price list. As of 8 October 2026, Cloudflare Registrar charged $80.00 at cost, and Namecheap $84.18 then $92.18 to renew. Cloudflare takes no documented crypto payment and ties the domain to Cloudflare DNS. The spread between sellers is small, so the 2-year rule weighs more than the choice of registrar.

## .ai questions

### Why must I pay for two years on a .ai?

The registry for Anguilla's country code sets a 2-year minimum term for every registration and renewal. Every registrar applies it, so no seller offers a single year. The yearly price shown above is multiplied by two at checkout and again at each renewal.

### Can I transfer a .ai I already own?

Yes. A .ai transfer to DotAlmanac is billed as two years: the transfer itself plus one renewal. Our transfer price per year equals the renewal price. You need the transfer code from your current registrar, and the domain must be unlocked there.

### Do I need to live in Anguilla?

No. The registry sets no residency, citizenship or company requirement for .ai. Ordering here takes an email address, which ICANN rules require us to verify, and nothing from your identity papers. The rules of other endings are in our [domain extension rules 2026](https://dotalmanac.com/data/domain-extension-rules-2026/ "What are the registration rules of each domain extension?") data.

### Does a .ai support DNSSEC and non-Latin names?

DNSSEC, yes: Anguilla's zone has a DS record in the root, and you can turn on managed signing or paste your own DS record. Internationalised names, no: .ai accepts only Latin letters, digits and hyphens. For a name in another script, pick an ending with IDN support, such as .com.
